Billy Yellow, a highly regarded Dine' (Navajo) singer (shaman) invited Earl to document the the Dine' lifestyle in Monument Valley. Here you see him in the process of creating a sandpainting of a Horned Toad. Notice his extraordinary coral and turquoise jawclaw necklace, belt buckle, turquoise bracelet and bow guard (on his left wrist). This photograph is one of a series.
Like the prints of Edward S Curtis and Joseph Muench this historically important photograph was taken with the permission of the person being photographed. It is part of a collection of educational images representing Earl's work in Monument Valley and archived at the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley. Earl, an avid anthropologist, was invited to document an entire "show you how we do it" cultural exhibition including sandpainting, sweat lodge and sing to share a greater understanding of the Dine' (Navajo) culture. Not all sizes are available on all media.
